Dexron VI in T-56??

I've got a gallon of Dex VI and was wondering if its acceptable to use it in a BW T-56? my trans is a 95 model and has the Dex IIE tag on it. I know dex II superceded to Dex III and you can use the VI in place of the III. Only reason I ask is it says on the back of the jug not for use in manual trans applications. I can't see how it would hurt since its just a better blend but figured i'd ask for anyone else's insight before I pour it in. Thanks.

Re: Dexron VI in T-56??

Has your T56 ever been rebuilt? Some of the newer lubes are not compatible with the older fibre friction rings in the pre-98 Fbody T56s. The rebuilt kits all come with the newer carbon-fibre rings and would be more compatible..

IMHO, I wouldn't take the chance to save $5 and risk a $500+ rebuild.. Use plain old Dex3 or Mobil1 ATF in your T56 and you won't have to worry..

Re: Dexron VI in T-56??

I tried mobil 1 atf in my fresh T56 with the carbon fiber rings and it just didn't work out so well. I went back to plain old dex and it shifts much better, no "notchy" shifting now. And it semed like there was a kind of break in period for it. After about 5000 miles my trans seemed to really free up a lot and its a dream to shift now. I was concerend that I'd done something wrong building it, but the switch from synthetic to reguler dex really made a difference in the trans. And it seems to be a lot quiter than everyone here says they are.

I'm sticking with plain dex for now. It works well, no reason to mess with it.

Yeah, you don't want to break in a new rebuild with Mobil1, just like a motor rebuild. I recommend 500 stop&go miles on regular DexIII, then switch to Mobil1 after that if you like.
