rear axle problem
rear axle problem
I have an 85 with a 3.08 gear 10-bolt in my 84 camaro. When driving the drivers side wheel tends to wobble a bit. It is not the rim and the bolts are not loose. Is the axle inside the housing bent or warped and can they be replaced?

Raise the wheel off the grouund and see if you can wiggle it. Some in and out play is to be expected(minimal). But if you can wiggle the wheel then your bearing is shot. If it's solid, then you could have a bad wheel or tire. Try switching both your rear wheels and see if the problem moves to the other side. If not, then I'd say you'r axle is bent. You can pick up a whole new pre-1989 rear for $100 at a junk yard, and steal an axle out of it. -Randy

Sounds like the axle is bent... very typical curb damage, the flange is not perpendicular to the shaft any more.
Yes they can easily be replaced, ordinarily takes less than ½ hour from drive-in to drive-out.
