Car: 1987 pontiac Trans Am
Engine: 1988 305 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 2:73 ... I think
700r4 4l80 4l80e whats the diference
i need a quick tranny out the junkyard and i got some choices i have a 87 305 tpi firebird with its 3rd blown 700r4 in the junkyard there are a couple of 700r4's but there are a bunch of v6 4th gen camaros and firebirds that had low mialage this is just a temp tranny before i do a 5 speed swap but i would like to know if a v6 4th gen auto trannys will work in my third gen i know the spedo wont work and i dont care about that i just want to know if it will all bolt up right like crossmember tork arm and what kind of tv cable i should use i figure the v6 trannys will be less trashed and there all the same price so any feedback will help thanks

700R4. Common 4 speed transmission. Good for the street with a low first gear and an overdrive.
There is no such thing as a 4L80
4L80E. Electronic version of a TH400. Shares roughly 80% of the internal parts and has the same gear ratios except it also has an overdrive. This transmission is very big and weighs about 250 pounds. Although a conversion is available, it requires a computer to control the transmission.
4L60E. An electronic version of the 700R4. Like the 4L80E, a computer is required to control the transmission.
Depending which V6 is in the fourth gens, the tranny may not fit onto the 305 because of a different bellhousing bolt pattern.
