I can't seem to find anyone who sells a new inspection cover for my 87 camaro 700r4. A metal replacement would be nice if possible.

Any transmission shop...About $25 for a plastic or metal one. A very common part that fits most GM cars, nothing special about it.

 

You want to obtain one? You're nuts! I've spent decades removing those. You want the converter to shed heat to the air, not transfer it into the transmission. Leave it off, you won't hurt anything, even if your car is lowered.

 

Thought it might reduce the salt and snow from kicking up in the area. Would you still say leave it off?

 

I would install the shield and forget about the Post that said about the so called cooling of the torque convertor. Better off to keep the road gunk out.

In 20 years of doing this, and keep in mind I'm in Utah, where we're famous for the greatest snow on earth, I've never once yet had any problem with removing that cover. It's unnecessary weight at best.

 

This is interesting, mine recently ripped off and im looking for a replacement, dont care about new or used but when i get money i plan on buying it. I have heard both sides but nobody seems to sway me either way. Right now im leaning towards getting one and putting it on, problem is i cant seem to figure out why i would leave my flexplate open to the road and anything that can get up into it, its a large spinning gear and something tells me dirt getting in there cant be good, but why do people still say to take it off? Am i still missing something?

 

No...Because you are the only one with any common sense. If GM wanted that area exposed they would have done it to save on the cost of the stamping. I am with you, I replaced mine just because it was cracked.

Ok well i might have a development to this. Recently since removing this cover i have noticed drops of oil on the ground where i park my car.(brand new parking garage and i park in the same spot consistently) This oil is dropping from right in the area where this cover would be, so basically i have like a 2inch little spot/line of oil. Im not leaking from the pan, or the transmission. Is the pressure plate oiled at all? Or could this just be grime from the road, its rainy season in florida, but it is oil leaking and leaves a stain on the ground. It looks like there is a little bit of oil on the pressure plate. The rear main seal is in this area also so im going to get that checked out. Whats your take on this?
