Re: Mechanical to Electronic Speedo trans adapter
You need an electronic vss and the associated gear to match your rear end. Youll also need a little yellow box found on pre 1990 firebirds with an electronic speedo that is found right with the ecm underneath the passenger side dash.
I converted the mechanical speedo and 82-85 style gauges (boo ralph nader) in my 1984 trans am to a complete cluster and electronic speedo from a 1987 bird a few years ago. I can probably dig up pictures and help you out if that's your goal. It was well worth it to get the later style gauges (still some of the best night time lighting on gauges Ive seen) and the 120mph electronic speedo, the down side was I never got around to getting the correct gear to get the speedo to read correct and it was a 5k redline/6k tach cluster going into my l69 which was a 6k redline.

Re: Mechanical to Electronic Speedo trans adapter
thanks for the info. i'm not using a stock electronic speedo- i'm going aftermarket, so i don't think i would need all that stuff. shouldn't i just need an adapter to go from the speedo cable output on the trans to the speedo?
would something like this work?

Re: Mechanical to Electronic Speedo trans adapter
I would assume that would work, your best bet is to call summit and ask if it would work for sure though.
Ya that should be all you need for the aftermarket speedo, at least a summit one as it says on the page but once again Im sure they can tell you for sure if itll work with your speedo.
