1971 vette motor/ starter/ T5?????

I have looked for information on this site as well as many others and I can't seem to find any answers. I recently rebuilt a 350 from a 1971 corvette and dropped it in my 89 RS. I also droped in a rebuilt WC T5. The stock bellhousing that came with the trans wouldn't work, so I picked up a lakewood( I still need the clutch fork, 40 bucks at summit). My problem is this, my starter when mounted in the factory spot is roughly an inch away from engageing the flywheel. It worked fine when I had the 700R4 in the car, but now that I have switche to the manual the flywheel is obviously a different size. I have an aftermarket high torque mini starter, but the adapter plate doesn't work for this motor. Am I going to need a new flywheel, or can I make an adapter for the mini starter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Most mini-starters have 2 sets of bolt holes in them, so they'll work with either 168-tooth or 153-tooth flywheels. Your starter being "amn inch" away means it's ready for a 168 tooth, while your flywheel must be 153-tooth. Stock T5 bellhousings only axccept 153-tooth flywheels, but yours should take 168 if your starter is a freak.
