700R4 trouble shifting

Hey guys. I got a question. Hopefully someone can help me out. I just replaced the pick up coil for my 86 IROC-Z and now I got my Camaro to rev. above 3,000 RPM’s. As I took the Camaro out for a test drive, the tranny wouldn’t shift out of 1st gear. With the shifter in 4th, at about 15 mph, when releasing the gas pedal, the Camaro slowed gradually. But if I had the shifter in first and going at 15 mph, then let go of the pedal, I could feel the force slowing me down (like shifting from 4th to 3rd, to 2nd, to 1st). The Camaro sat for 6 years due to a blown cylinder. Has new fluid and filter. Reverse works good. Kick down is set properly at open throttle. Check engine light is off. What could be wrong with my tranny? Any ideas guys?
My uncle told me to pour a bottle of rubbing alcohol to see if it’ll break something loose. Is this good for the tranny or can I damage it more by using his method? Tranny is a 700R4.

Re: 700R4 trouble shifting

Could be a stuck valve in the VB or pump somewhere or maybe the clutch plates are bad or there is to much clearance, i just had mine apart cause it wouldnt shift from 2nd to 3rd without completely letting off the gas...clutch plates were bad and there was way to much clearance

Re: 700R4 trouble shifting

I think it may be a stuck valve then because in 2003, I threw #5 piston rod. The tranny was good at the time that the engine took a dump. It also had about 5,000 miles on the new shift kit that was installed. So how do I get this valve in the VB un-stuck. Should I take the alcohol approach that my uncle had mentioned?

Personally i'd just take the pan off the tranny and pull the VB to check it out but i have a vehicle lift avaliable to use, if you have a lift you could use thats what i'd try, but if not i cant answer your question about the alcohol, ive never heard of it done i guess

OK. So what should I look for when I take off the VB? Itll be my first time messing with my tranny.

Re: 700R4 trouble shifting

Well valves dont just stick on their own, there has to be something that causes it, contamination of some sort, when you take the pan off check the bottom of the pan and see how much metal there is in it, it is not really that uncommon to have some metal particles in the bottom of the pan, but that is what would cause your valve to stick (particles stuck in vavle in VB) if there is a large amount of metal particles then you can just take off the valve body and disassemble each valve one at a time, checking for contamination in VB and on valve, make sure you put them back together before taking the next one apart though unless you know how it all work 100%, either way though if theres a lot of metal in your pan your probably gonna want a rebuild cause that metals all got to come from somewhere...

Re: 700R4 trouble shifting

When I had dropped the pan to replace the fluid and filter, I did see a small piece of metal about the size of this guys eye (). It was more of a flake than a chipped piece of metal. Other than that, that was it. Well then. Im going to put the camaro up on some ramps so that I can disasemble the tranny. Ill get back at you with my results. Thanks IROC_U. Anyone else with ideas?
