gear and posi question

Hi, i know this is very common question, i have read many threads about gearing and still cannot decide what could be better..
So here i am. I have 305 with xr264hr cam and other mods., stock converter, stock 700r4 tranny and stock rear end with crappy 2.73 gears.
everything is fine, but by the time fills like engine asks better rear ration.
In perfect I want get the same mileage or better then i have but with 3.73.
on other hand there is very popular option 3.42. thus but decreasing rpm I can save some on gas.
at present very often i drive in 3rd. because mostly drive in city. and when I get on highway i don't drive faster then 65mph (because local regulations allows only 55)

Secondly what i get if Iļl switch to limited slip? except headache every 40kmiles (clutch change) and both wheel spinning during burnout. I mean is it useless mod for daily driver?

Re: gear and posi question

The 3.42 gear is very popular for cars that are driven a lot. The 700R4 has a 3.06 first gear ratio, which works well with the 3.42 gear. The 3.73 can be a little too much in most cases because of the 3.06 first gear.

Adding an Eaton Posi would be a good idea. The Eaton will last much longer than most of the other limited slip differentials. There are thousands of them still working well in cars after 35 years of use. This is what was installed in all of the Chevy muscle cars from the '60s and early '70s and most are still working fine.Send me an email if you need more information on the Eaton. biggearhead@bellsouth.net

Re: gear and posi question

You're driving a F-body in Latvia??? I was supposed to spend a year in Riga after college, but never quite made it, still here in Michigan.

Is it hard to find parts over there? You're car is pretty unique in Eastern Europe, I would assume!
