no overdrive in 700r4

my 700r4 tranny will not shift into overdrive. I can get it to if i go 80-85. It will shift easier to overdrive if it is cooler (the transmission). Also, if im in any gear and accelerate rapidly, it wont shift into the next gear. I have to let off on the gas for it to do so. any ideas?

try disconnecting the plug that plugs into the side of your transmission, test drive it and let us know what happens. however dont leave it unplugged, its only a test!

It may be in overdrive and you not feel it. not calling you stupid, im just saying i have the same trans, and i thought the same thing. what makes you think its not in overdrive if you don't mind me asking? 700r4's wont shift in to overdrive if your at WOT (wide open throtle) thats why under heavy acceleration it wont shift, and your tranny may think its a wot all the time, try reseting your TV cable theres a thread about it, search for it if you don't know how to reset it off the top of your head. theres only two electircal connections in your tranny and neither of them control shifting or overdrive.

Re: no overdrive in 700r4

Electrical connector only locks the torque converter - definitely adjust the tv cable as it's the only thing that determines shift points.

Re: no overdrive in 700r4

Ok, thanks. Ill try adjusting the tv cable and unplugging the sensor. I know its not in overdrive because when it is, i can go 85 at about 2500 rpms where as third is around 4500! and i can tell when it shifts into 4 because it lurches forward. I dont think its just an overdrive problem, i think its a shifting problem. If i am in 1 or 2 and punch on it, it wont shift to the next gear unless i let off the gas almost completely. then it will squak the tires while shifting. and if its too high rpm, it waits until it goes back down to a certain point to shift, which in the process slows the car down. I very confused with it.

Re: no overdrive in 700r4

I might be having a similar prob to the first guy....Question, for any and all. I recently put a carbed 350 4 bolt into a 92 z28 25th. and added a 700r4 from same year rs 305 TBI. Granted the RS had 203,XXX miles ran, but quikly became our parts car.

When I was putting trans in, i replaced the front seal and everything els seamed good. Upon test driving though, the car shifted a little high and i dont thing Over drive kicked in, but it goes in all 4 gears. Also the tach read 3,800 rpms at 70 mph. Trans is sluggish do to age and how many miles its seen, but should that stop it from hitting over drive?

Also note that the two plugs for the tranny in the 92 Z28 were little broken so we borrowed some from a z28 parts car we also have. Every gears works, shifts normal for the 700r4 but even at 40mph its wont kick down..yes TV cable is hooked up but may need adjusting...need help..or maybe new trans?
