G80 gov lock in my rear end? and replacing rear end

Hey guys, I have a 91 T/A 'vert with the 305 TPI and 700r4 trans. Today, I had to take it out (I swear this is the first and last time I'm driving it in the winter!!) and the driveway at the place I store it is pretty icy. Obviously my car had no grip but when I was spinning the tires, I noticed that when I feather it, only 1 wheel would turn, but if I would gun it, both would start turning. It seemed to have been behaving like the G80 gov-lock diff. I thought that those were only offered in trucks. I also heard that those don't like burnouts... so why offer it in this car that's made for em? LOL

And I wanna replace my drum 2.73 rear end with discs and a higher ratio, maybe 3.23 or 3.73. I'm thinking of just buying the whole axle kinda like here:

This car is not my daily driver so it doesn't have to be perfectly efficient, but I want it to be relatively confortable to drive on the highway. I'm looking for quicker take offs. So what do you guys thing? 3.23 or 3.73? And what about calibrating the speedo after?

And I'm assuming that replacing a rear end isn't a daunting task if you have the time right? And is a drum to disc conversion difficult?

The Governor Lock was installed in some of the F body cars in the '80s. Most got the Auburn. The G80 code is not just for the Gov Lock. This code was used for any limited slip differential. It was used in the '60s and early '70s for the Eaton Posi that was installed in the Chevy muscle cars. It was used in the Camaros and Trans Ams in the '70s with the Traction Lock, in the SS Monte Carlo in the '80s with the Auburn, and the SS Impala in the '90s, which also had the Auburn.

There is a lot of information in the sticky about doing the disc brake swap that James will post a link to.

Oh ok,
and what is a reasonable price for a rear end complete with the discs, 3.23/3.73 with posi?

I sold a rebuilt 9 bolt with 3.27 gears for $550. I've seen them from $100 to $350 that were not rebuilt. The 4th gen rear ends are pretty cheap and have better brakes.

Do they drop in? I heard that they're a tad wider than 3rd gen rear ends

I would go with a 4th gen rearend. I picked up a disk brake posi rearend with 3.23s for $130. I put in a set of 3.73s and I love it!
