gears interchangeable?

Okay so I'm suposed to pick up a 4th gen 10bolt after work to day with shot gears for a rear disc set up and I just put some 3.73s(its a posi btw) in my car. I was wondering if I could just swap out my gears into that rearend and throw it in my car or would it be better just to convert my rear end to disc? I did a search and could'nt find anything on this too.

they will swap. but you will have to set it back up properly. You cant just throw it in.

no problem. I just installed a 95 z28 rearend under my 88 a few months back. Updated it with a set of 3.73s from a third gen rearend.

so is the 4th gen rear you are getting disk brake?

yeah its coming out of an ls1 car, but I found out he's got 3.42s so I cant swap in my gears anyways cuz I have 3.73's with a 2seirs carrier, so I think I'm just gonna convert mine over to disc

Re: gears interchangeable?

If you are going to use 3.73 gears that are made for a 2 series on a 3 series differential then it won't work. You will have to use 3 series gears on the 3 series differential. If you want to swap the differential too then that will also be a problem because your '89 probably has 26 spline axles and the later rear end will have 28 spline axles. You won't be able to swap the axles because they are not the same length. The brakes might swap onto your rear end as long as you have the 4 bolt brake flange on your housing. If you have the 3 bolt flange then the brakes won't swap either.

Ed Miller fabs the following for an easy conversion:

http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/i30.html

There are other concerns in the swap, however: axle removal, proportioning valve, e-brake, and speedo:
