transmission not shifting until 4000rpms plaese help

I just bought a 92' firebird and it has the 3.1 v-6. The problem I'm having is the trans. will not shift until about 4000 rpms and when it does shift it shifts hard. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is my first firebird and I don't know much about them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tryed to adjust the TV cable ? If not do a search for how to and see if that fixes it first . And Welcome to TGO .

I have looked for how to do that but the location of the tv cable and how to adjust it are very vague. If someone could be a little more in depth that would be helpful. Or maybe point me in the direction of where to find a diagram?

Where the cable connects to the bracket at the engine it has a silver button you push in and hold then you pullthe cable housing back as far as you can then release the button then grab the throttle at the throttle body and open the throttle all the way by hand slowly and the TV cable will click as it adjusts when you are at full throttle and the clicking stops you have adjusted the cable and can let the throttle close and get in and take it for a drive and post back the results .

Thanks 89-bird that worked!!! It shifts perfectly now. Its amazing how that little cable can make you think you are gonna have to get a transmission rebuild. I can't thank you enough.

You will also find out that a little miss adjustment on that cable can also cause you to need a new trans. Its adjustment is ubar critical to your trans life, about as important as you breathing.

mess it up and its dead.

you dodged a bullet as you can find lots of post here where smoeone didn't make it but a few blocks with a miss adjusted cable and it was toast.
