is it a necessary expense?

I need to buy a custom crossmember for the 6 speed swap. Ive read that in order to get a driveshaft safety loop you must buy a new tourqe arm and i simply cant afford that.. Is it necessary to have the safety loop? Thanks

Are you planning on drag radials/slicks or running super fast times at the drag strip?

maybe into the 11's at the most for now. is it really necessary though? Just to be clear, im not going to beat on the car hardly at all for a while. I just need the new transmission to get me to college and get me to school and work for a few months... then ill upgrade the transmission and make it strong and get other things such as the safety loop.

Re: is it a necessary expense?

Alright guys, I really appreciate the answers. As soon as the swap is done ill post a few pics/vids. I just have 2 more questions, I really wanted to buy the hydrualic assembly new, but i cant seem to find it at a reasonable price. I cant order it from the gm store (150 with shipping) because my address dosent match up on the debit card . I found one for 100 bucks on ebay used. Is that reasonable and how hard is it to bleed?

And I rarely see mention of the inspection cover. I know gm stopped making them and its sorta hard to get them now. I found one on ebay for 30 bucks i think. Should I go ahead and buy it?

Again, thanks alot guys

Re: is it a necessary expense?

You don't need a driveshaft loop for street use. The idea is it's a safety device required by the NHRA. If you put your car on the dragstrip and you don't have street tires, the techs are going ot look for a loop. If you don't have one, you can't race with slicks. But on the street no one is going to stop you. If you break a U-joint it'll probably just destroy the driveshaft, and other mechanical parts, the worry is that it could do all kinds of destructive bad things if it breaks at the wrong time, potentially killing you.

The inspection cover part number listed a few places is also listed a few places for the T5. I'd check this myself, but I actually gave the inspection cover from my last T5 to the guy that bought the transmission. I need to find one for my T56 at some point, but it's not a high priority to me right now. When the time comes, you can bet I'll look for a used T5 inspection cover before I spent $30 for a piece of stamped steel. I have no idea if the V6/V8 3rd/4th gen T5's use the same inspection cover as the T56, but it sure looks that way. If you try one and it works, let the rest of us know.
