upgrade to 3.08 posi rear
I have a 91 RS new 350 tbi .30 over, headers, mild "RV" cam, exhaust, open air filter. I have aquired a complete 6HT 2.73 posi rear end. I was originally going to change to 3.23 or 3.42 gears but after much research I found that the 3.08 will give a 13% increase in torque vs. 18% with the 3.23 and 20% with the 3.42. Because I have the seris II carrier I would need to purchase 'thick' 3.23 or 3.42 gears or use a spacer. I read in several locations that ring spacers are not good to use. After reading a million and one posts on the never ending rear upgrade saga I have come to this conclusion.... I am going to upgrade the posi rear end with Richmond 3.08 gears and go from a 37 to 40 driven gear while keeping the same stock 17 drive gear. I feel that a different than stock torque converter in the future may also be a good upgrade and make up for not going with the higher numerical gear. The upgrade to posi alone should be well worth it not to mention the quicker gear along with the 13% increase in torque.
If this sounds completely ridiculous feel free to chime in! Thanks, Jon
