Help, installed ring gear on posi and

This is a 3 series Zexel Torsen, with GM 14092111 7.625" Gear 3:73, bought it and the guy said it was a 3 series gear.

Now i went and snugged the bolts up and the cross shaft wont go in, Did the guy lie to me and are these gears just to tall?

Gears to tall? its a 3.73- part number dosent come up with much, but its from a S10

Re: Help, installed ring gear on posi and

I would have thought that a 3.73 would have worked fine. When you get to about 4.56 you need a special cross shaft to clear the gears. I would install the unit in the housing and see if you are going to be able to get the backlash set without any problems. If you can set the backlash without having to modify anything then the gears are right. The cross shaft might need some slight modifications. I've had to do this before, but not with a 3.73. Let me know if you can set the backlash and I'll tell you how to fix the shaft.

How could i modify it, i'd have to grind it down, which i shouldnt have too, and if i did grind it down, it would become sloppy.

Do i just need to buy new gears? this is bullshit, day of time to put this rear together..

You only have to grind a little bit of the shaft. Not all the way down, just a small amount. See if you can get the backlash set first.

Hello Superjustin13!!

Anything bigger than 3:42 requires some "massaging" of the cross shaft/pinion block!!

Just a thought!! Can you remove the ring gear, then install the cross shaft/pinion block, then re-install the ring gear??

If you can't do that, what prevents you from doing that???

Thanks for pointing that out in your PM Superjustin13!! Never thought that far ahead!!!

Hello Again Superjustin13!!

The pinion block "will" have to be clearanced a bit!! There is such a thing as a two piece one, but it's hard to come by!! SLP had one part # 64002, used for 4.10 or larger gears!! It probably would work in your case, but as I said hard to come by!!

just be careful, and only take off enough material from the pinion

block to get it to slide into place!!

I know that you can do a
