700r4 Not upshifting properly

After 3 days of trial&error, and the oodles of help from everyone here, I have finally gotten my TV Cable mounted, measured, and adjusted properly... Unfortunatly this hasn't solved my problem...

Kicks down just fine, upshifts late (1>2 at about 20 mph) and Hard... 2>3 happens very ... sloppily and I hear that poor tranny just winding way up... No griding noise, no scraping, no noise other than the actually tranny widing up too high....

2 days ago, I performed a radiator swap, which left my tranny fluid pretty low... So I put 1 quart of DexII/Merc compatible fluid in it...

What could be causing this issue? Too much fluid? Too Little fluid? Is it possible i let it go so low that it got air pockets?

I have absolutly no experience with transmissions other than the last 3 days of TV cable hell (chuckles at the adventure of learning).

Any thoughts? IF any other information is needed, please don't hesitate to ask...

this can be a tricky subject. The best way I have found to fix this is to move the TV cable adjustment out (towards the carb) one click at a time and take a short test drive. You didnt say if you checked the fluid hot. Are you having any trouble with overdrive engaging late?

what would be the problem if OD was engaging late?

Re: 700r4 Not upshifting properly

Checked fluid while hot, it turned out it was pretty low still... added another 1 1/2 quarts.. drove for 20 minuits ( carefully, forcing powershifts between 1>2>3) to no avail... Got out, in one last attempt to adjust detent cable... pulled it out bout half way ( the sleeve ) and wouldn't ya know.. the sucker started shifting proper again...

Now... In Normal driving, it shifts just fine... maybe a LITTLE bit soft, but nothing crazy or even noticable if I weren't specifically paying attention for it. The kickdown doesn't work now though... like .. at all.. I mash it.. and it doesn't mash heh... looks like im gonna spend another day di*king with a cable lol.

-Edit- As far as overdrive, yes, i WAS having problems with ANY gear engaging.... I didn't drive it over the speed of 30 tops beacuse i didn't wanna do any more damage than was done...

go here their is way too much info on the 700r4, even home made mods, ive used this site many times when Ive had issues with mine it will help you better than I can.

the problem with overdrive shifting late is the cable is too tight so the trans thinks the throttle is open more than it really is.

Yes it was ... on the highway it wouldn't kick in until 86mph / 2700rpm

OK! So I believe i can bring closure to this post because i think I've fixed the multiple problems...

Problem 1:
Tv cable was way out, I couldn't get the sucker to automatically rachet out unless i had the bracket a massive 6.75 inches back from the throttle arm centerline.... well having it that far back, even ratcheted out max caused tension on the cable which sent signal that i was always more open throttle than i really was... Fixed by bringing bracket up to 4.75 inches from centerline and manually ratcheting out sleeve by 2 visable teeth. Kickdown is 1/4 second laggy but, I'll dial in a bit better later.
Problem 2:
Busted gasket on pan. When I bought the car , owner said he had a tranny pan leak, so i bought a new pan/gasket/filter, had a certain Muffler place put it on since my driveway was total mush and all roads were snowy at the time... apparently they torqued bolts in too tight , ruined my brand new gasket... Gasket is now replaced.
Problem 3:
When changing the radiator I only visably saw 1/2qt loss of fluid. Thinking I'd put 1 quart in and be fine was a mistake. Apparently TOTAL capacity is 6.25qts. After adding 2 full more quarts I was barely in the Full line on dipstick... Fixed by adding fluid of course.
Semi problem 4:
Apparently without the geo-correcter arm, I had to either set the cable 'tight' enuff to have kickdown, but would force it to shift late and always feel like i had a low gear 4wheel drive vehicle... OR "loose" enuff to shift proper under normal accel. but have no real kickdown until 3>4 gear.

Problem solved with a power drill and a piece of 1/8" steel plate... simply eyeballing the many pictures and getting dimensions on Summit racings corrector plate, I fashioned an extra piece of metal to bolt onto the mount stud. Also, offsetting the mounting bracket 3/4" farther from the carb straightned the cable out properly, allowing clearance of the return spring.

So after all this, 1>2 and 2>3 work great, kick down is working properly I believe, ( I'm able to push it down into both 3>1 and 3>2 depending on how I hit the gas) and later this afternoon I'll check out the highway performance.
