700-R4 Uh Oh??

Hey guys im new to the forum but I was hoping to get some input on my situation.. I have an 86 camaro Z28 that I just recently swapped out the 305 for a performance built 350. We set up the detent cable as close as we could without driving the vehicle so i could take it up to the exhaust shop and get that done so we didn't **** off the neighbors tuning the motor.. So anyways The guy at the exhaust shop turned up my idle a little bit so it ran a little better going home well in doing so he knocked the detent cable of the throttle linkage which him nor I realized . I live about seven miles away from the exhaust shop and drove home noticing the tranny acting up, my question is is seven miles a short enough distance to do damage to the tranny.. Because I hope not I just put a grand into the transmission less than a year ago..

7 miles can be way more than enough travel to do serious damage to a tranny... but... It depends on how you were driving..

If you were droppin the hammer, powershifting down gears etc... well yeah... you prolly did some damage... If you were using moderate acceleration, normal braking/deceleration etc... More than likely you just took a few miles off the life of it.

I just finished a hellacious week with troubleshooting my T.V. Cable, at one point I had it so whacked out it wouldnt even shift outta 1st gear without "feathering" the gas pedal... Now that i've got it all setup right, I don't notice any permanent damage.

To put your mind at ease, although this is NOT suggested, a friend of mine with a 89 Iroc doesn't even have his TV cable connected, and he's using a stock 700r4... that being said, he doesn't 'get up on the throttle' except in first, and he manually powershifts all the time... so... just keep an eye and an ear on it.

(P.S. I could totallly be talking outta my rear here, everything I know about these darn transmissions is learned from what I've taken from other members in the last 2 weeks, and from countless articles, tech guides, and T.C.I. Manuals, but I figured I could put my 2 cents in)

the 700r4 has a checkball that applies full line pressure if the throttle valve is not working. if you were feeling hard shifts while driving the checkball was working.

Re: 700-R4 Uh Oh??

It's NOT a "detent" cable, it's a TV cable - "throttle valve" cable. It's nothing like a detent cable - it opens and closes the throttle valve in very specific proportions to where the throttle is at the time, adjusting pressures in the transmission accordingly in precise amounts - and it needs to be set perfectly to do so. It's a 3 minute job to set it correctly, and the car doesn't even have to be running. Make sure you get it adjusted and set correctly before you drive the car anymore. Like mentioned, I doubt you killed the tranny in 7 miles if you drove normal, but it's possible as anything is.
