My transmission shifts hard from park to reverse and nuetral to drive.Making the car jump foward .I am around 750 rpm's in park and 550 in drive.I just bough the car and I am not sure if it has a shift kit upgrade. To be honest it doesn't bother me I just don't know if this hard shifting is hard on the diff.

make sure your idle speed isn't too high, could also be u-joints.

I'd say check for excessive play (worn out) on your u-joints on the driveshaft first
What year is the transmission? What is the idle speed when this happens?

I to have this problem, 86 IROC 305TPI. rpm approx 500-600. Trannie mount replaced when having service/flush etc of transmission.
Will check driveshaft next time in shed.

The 1982-1986 units did not have the forward accumulator and the cushioned reverse that the 1987 and later units had. Therefore the harsher neutral to drive and reverse engagements.
