Cross shaft pin screw wont fit

I just got done installing my no slip and I ran into a problem. I put the cross pin in and ready to slide the screw in and it seems like its too long and it hit the bearing cap. Now i got this screw from the dealer which is PN# 25872305 which he said crossed with PN#14056196 . Can anyone verify that this is the right part number ? If it is would i be ok to grind a little off the top of the hex head so it can slip buy the bearing cap ?

dont grind it. rotate the carrier some and it should slip in towards the top or the bottom

Correct part number for my 85. The following link should provide some useful info for installing the bolt:

Re: Cross shaft pin screw wont fit

well then pull the bearing cap back off and slide it in and see if it works or not. Do you have an old one to compare the new one too?

They old carrier was thrown out. That bolt broke in it and I didnt feel like screwing with it so I took a cut off wheel to it and hacked it out. I had a new aftermarket carrier so the old one was useless to me.

Re: Cross shaft pin screw wont fit

I measured an old OE cross pin bolt. Overall all, it's two inches. BTW, I ordered mine from the dealership. The bag has the xxx196 number on it. The link above also provides the Napa p/n should that be of any use. Good luck.

Re: Cross shaft pin screw wont fit

yeah I always replace them with new ones anyway. Cheap insurance.

If its being that big of a problem, I would just pull the bearing block off and install the pin. But definately be carefull when installing it. If it doesnt want to go, it could very well be the wrong one. Dont force it. Odds are it will probably work, then just put the cap back on, button her up, and take it for a spin.

Hey JamesC, any reason you go to a dealership? Ive always picked up mine from the local Standard's help rack for $2. Just curious.

Well i bought 2 of the gm bolts to have an extra on hand. i think i will go to Napa and get one and compare them. I think its more the aftermarket carrier giving me problems more than anything.

Put the bolt in before you put the bearing cap on. This is a comon problem. I always install the bolt before putting the differential in. You don't have to pull the bolt all the way out to remove the shaft. All you have to do is slide it out a little and the shaft will come out. Just remove your bearing cap, put the bolt in and reinstall the cap.

Re: Cross shaft pin screw wont fit

Well i got the pin in and GM caked so much locktite on it that it didnt want to thread in. I had to screw the bolt in and back it out about 10 times to compress the locktite. When it was almost seated i just kept screwing it in it was hard but kept going in and then the hex head stripped. So now i have about 2 threads left showing and the head is stripped. How can i get this bolt out with out stripping the hex worse ?

I don't know if you use a 12 point or a 6 point wrench on this bolt, but I always use a 6 point. The head on these bolts rounds off too easy with a 12 point. I bought a special 6 point wrench just for this reason.

Re: Cross shaft pin screw wont fit

A 6 point might get it out. 5/16 and 8mm are the same size, so you might be able to find a 6 point 8mm.

Re: Cross shaft pin screw wont fit

try the 6 point, but be careful. If you feel it start to slip, stop. A small propane torch to slightly heat up the carrier around the bolt hole can help too.

If that dont work, a slightly smaller socket might work if you have rounded it too much for the 6 point to bite.

last resort is to use vise grips.

Re: Cross shaft pin screw wont fit

I'm gonna try tonight and see what happens. If nothing else works im just gonna put a wrench on it and tack weld it to the hex head and get it off that way. I figures that i just had the rearend completely rebuilt and the last bolt that goes on is the one that bites me in the @ss.
