What will my rear end handle?

I have a factory rear end with a Zexel-Torsen 3.42 posi from a 2002 Camaro SS.

I have a very well built 4L60 and I'm planning on having it refreshed and adding a 9" Yank or Vigilante converter in the 2400-2600RPM range.

The engine I'm building is a blown SBC that will be putting down a minimum of 450-500ft\lbs of TQ. My 4L60 is specifically built to handle this but I know my rear end will not take the abuse of a track with this setup.

What can I expect from my rear end with this setup? Will it just snap the first time I floor it from a dead stop? Will it last 20K more miles?

Thanks!

like always, its a crap shoot. Generally, if you have good traction and the car hooks, the rear is gone

That really friggin sucks lol.

What kind of budget does it take to get a rear end that would handle the power? I only use the car on the street and road track, no drag racing.

Get a rear from Moser, or Currie, depending on your 12 bolt, or 9 inch preference, and be done with it. After properly choosing your options on the build, your rear end worries will be over.

Agreed. It's going to be costly with an aftermarket setup from the above. But it's going to be costly to fix the broken rear end that will result from the stock setup. And rear ends NEVER break when you're at home or near home.

You're going to want a higher stall than 2400-2600 with that much power. Bolt on LT1's typically run 2800-3200. And LS1's run 3200-3600.

I was hoping to keep my RPMs above the flash RPM of the converter when on freeways though, or so my thinking way lol.

Ok, I'll look into the suggested rear ends.

Thanks!

Re: What will my rear end handle?

I went 9.73 at 142 on my stock 98-02 rear. Wasnt just a 1 time effort either. 9.97, 9.86 twice, 9.93, and half dozen 10.0 passes at 137-141 mph. 60 foots were in the 1.49 to 1.70 range

Nitrous car went 1.41 and 1.45 60 foots for 10.6's at 127mph. Held for me over the years. I dont think an auto car will hurt a 2.73-3.42 gear rear if the 60 is much above 1.6

My bolt on L98 abused the rear for years cutting 1.7x's and the 383 all motor had a bunch of 1.55 passes at 400whp/380wtq
