Ok I recently had my rearend upgraded with an eaton posi and 3.73 gears. When my mechanic was inspecting the parts before he installed them he found that the pinnion out of my ring and pinnion kit had a little damage on the splines. Long story short I had to order a new set from summit. My question is what should I do with the orginal set that got damaged. I ordered it like a year ago from somone on line so I doubt they will take it back, my mechanic said he knows some one who is a machanist who said they couild repair it for 40 bucks, what I want to know is, is it worth it or is it possible for me to sell the kit for someone who might be looking for a spare 3.73 gear... Its a brand new youkon kit and it cost me like 150. Any advice out there about what I should do.

 

What kind of damage does it have? Can you post a picture?

 

Supposely there is a "gash" out of the treadding in the pinnion. I just cleaned it up and examined it my self and only thing I saw was a few minior scrapes, the threadding looks alright and the splines toward the back has a small scratch but nothing major. All I know is that my mechanic said that he tried using it and it wouldnt fit right. As for the pic I can try but im not very adapt at that typeof stuff.

You don't need to change the axles. The 2.73 uses a 2 series differetnial and the 3.73 uses a 3 series. You need to swap to a 3 series differential or get a special thick gear that is made for the 2 series.

Does it have the same splines as your axles?

 

Do you have any suggestions about what I should do....I dont see any serious damage but at the same time I dont know why my mechanic would say that he couldnt use it if there wasnt a problem. If its uasable I would like to see if I can sell it cause i kinda need the cash. As fo a pic Im trying to put one up but I cant seem to make it work.
