So after going junkyard hunting I found this:






After having my good pulling of what I needed, my inner third gen started tingling. So I started to look for the Rpo sticker and found out its a GU5 rear which is 3.23. The car is a 89 if I remember right and is a 3.1L V6.

Would it be worth it to purchase the rear? I think they would sell it at around $100-150 depending if I pick it up as a whole.

What do you guys think or Im I better off just buying new gears alone and upgrading?
Any idea how much that would cost and any good brands to look into?
What would upgrading to a Posi or closed diff cost and require to install? and same question about brands?


Thanks folks and yea, I was bumed about the car too, It was hit from the side Seemed like a nice car not much rust.

 

It would be easier to install a posi in this rear end than it would be to install new gears in yours. I recommend a Eaton Posi. This is much better than most of the others that are available for the 7.5 rear end. The Eaton is $440 and bearings and shims to install it are $45. I was looking at the Powertrax lockright too but seems like for a bit more I might as well get a better deal and better for a DD. Ill keep the Eaton noted.

Any good places to pick up some good quality 3.42s?

 

IMO, a pick and pull rear axle wouldn't be worth it unless it was g80 limited slip. I'd keep an eye open on your local craigslist.
