clunking

i get a clunking while driving. i had my uncle listen to it and we have decided it is definitely from the rear end. i have a 84 camaro with the 305 H.O. so i should have the stock axle with 3.73 gears.

well the plan is to replace both wheel bearings and seals to see if that is the cause for the clunking. i dont think it is and my uncle doesnt think it is either.

so my question is what do i need to do after that. should i look for another rear end and trans plant the guts or can i get parts to rebuild mine.

any links to parts would be great so i know what im looking for.

also what are the specs that i would need to know for my rear end. like spline count and any thing else i could want to know.

Re: clunking

first I would check the transmission mount, you need to actually drop the crossmember in order to check the mount ... then I would check the torque arm bushing at the tranny...

Re: clunking

this is how i found out i needed a torque arm bushing, i jacked the right side rear tire up off the ground and gave the tire a clockwise twist, the torque arm jumped and made that familiar clunk noise... although i dont know if it would be the same for a manual trans

i suppose you could just get under there and look at it instead of doing all that, but thats how i found out mine was bad, lol

Re: clunking

Agreed with all above, and also the obligatory u-joints, & lower controll arms.

If everything else checks good, pull the rearend cover & look for missing teeth in ring & pinion gears.( Which may also add an occasional jerky feel )

what does a bad mount look like. i recently changed the trany and put the mount on that came with the trany not my original one and the clunk stayed the same.

also how do you tell if the torque are bushing is bad. it looked fine to me in the same process of changing the tranny.

the original torque arm bushing is riveted IIRC...

swapped drive shaft out for an aluminum one and i have the same clunk so i wouldnt think the u-joints would be the problem.

how do you tell if the control arms are making the noise?

I think i have that occasional jerky feeling. my uncle was kind of leaning toward some teeth missing. which would suck. can i rebuild the rear end.
