Thoughts and advice on Z-28 rear
Thoughts and advice on Z-28 rear
Hey all,
I have drums on the rear of my 92 vert. I came across a Z-28 in a yard with discs. Do you think it's worth pulling the whole rear-end and swapping out? Is there an easier route to get to disc brakes on the rear?

What year is the Z28 diff? You already have the best factory diff possible under your car. If the Z28 is older than 1990, you're downgrading. If the Z28 disk brakes are on a 9 bolt diff, they don't easily adapt to your 10 bolt. The housing mounts are different.
If you want to convert drum to disk, your best option is to spend a few bucks on an aftermarket disk brake kit. It will be far better than a factory system.
If you don't need or want a parking brake, you can look at the sticky in the brake forum that I wrote up about putting disk brakes on any diff. I fabricated and installed some GMC Jimmy PBR rear brakes on my 9" diff for around $200. The same principal can be applied to any diff if you have even a little bit of fabrication skills.

My 'guess' is that you'll need the second-design parking brake cables as well.

Thanks guys. Great advice as always. I'll take a look at the aftermarket discs. One thing I do want to keep is the e-brake. Even though I have an auto, I always use the e-brake when parked. Don't like rocking the tranny.

With the following kit and the second-design combination valve, you should be good to go:
