1 to 2 shift stuck?
Hi all, i have a strange problem with my 700r4 auto trans. Now it only happens under wot and when the trans is in drive and shifting into second gear. This just started happening. Ok, basically i can take off from a stop in drive and as the trans is going into second it goes: clunk , clunk , clunk, and just wont go into second until i let off of the gas. I tried adjusting the tv cable for a softer shift. Which worked, but the car feels less powerful now and i was always told that a transmission will last longer with a little bit of a stiffer shift. (meaning tv cable adjusted for a firmer shift). Please can someone shed some light on this subject for me? I know little about auto transmissions. I am hoping it is not something too seriously wrong.LOL
Re: 1 to 2 shift stuck?
If hydraulic line pressure is correct there may be problems with the band, band application, low input piston release, or sticking overdrive piston. I've had a recent trans do about the same thing from a sticking overrun apply piston:

Notice how the overrun piston is stuck and canted in the forward piston bore? That's enough to prevent full release of the overrun clutch and cause shudder into 2nd gear. Since this piston is used to apply 4th in conjunction with the 2/4 band, you'd never notice a problem in any other range. This usually happens when the forward clutch is worn and allows over-extension of the overrun apply piston. If you don't find a hydraulic problem, it may be time for new clutch discs and replacement pistons (all in a rebuild kit).
