I hear a noise...

Hey all,
2 week ago i swapped out my rear for a posi. yesterday got my brake lines in for it (ones on the rear leaked) put them on tonight and bled the system. car stops fine takes off fine... i do notice a little humming noise from the rear, when i step on the brake it quiets down then when letting of the brake and just cursing it picks back up, when on the gas picking up speed i dont notice it to much. thinking its just the shoes rubbing on the drums.

the gears and all look great, their was no metal shavings or anything when i got it so i dont really think its the gears.

as i said before i think its the shoes rubbing or now as i write this could it be the axle bearings.....

any pointers?
Thanks

Re: I hear a noise...

wheel bearings are a strong possibility. The brakes might be changing the load on the bearings, quieting them down. Just did the ones in my van, made quite the difference.

thanks for the input, guess if i "check" the bearings that will involve replacing them if i have to pull the axles, so hope its just the new brake parts... thanks

it's a fairly cheap and easy job, plus you get to change the fluid, which isnt a bad thing. It took me like 30 minutes to do the ones on my van, but then again it doesnt have a LSD/posi/locker, or whatever you Chevy guys call it (limited slip differential for Fords).

You dont want to wait too long because it will damage your axles eventually. An easy way to tell is to check for excessive play (up and down) in the hub when you pull the wheel off. It should be pretty tight.

Often when the bearings are shot, you'll see weeping from the axle tubes. Here's a how-to, if need be:

You don't have to replace the bearings to check them. All you have to do is remove the axles and inspect the area where the bearing runs on it. If the axles show signs of wear then you need to replace the bearings and axles.

i figured he ment that if he went through the trouble of pulling the axles, he should just go ahead and spend the $30 to change the bearings.
Also, i dont know how good they are, but they have repair bearings that ride on a slightly different part of the axle in case it is worn. I have them in my van right now actually, even though the axles were good (it's just all they had at the store).

Those repair bearings usually cause more trouble than they fix. Thel usually leak oil all over the brakes and they are very hard to remove when you get ready to fix it the right way.

That's what i was getting at, if im going to take the axle out might as well replace them....

So i just took the car for a spin, the noise quieted down while picking up speed and around 50-60 i dont hear anything at all, but when slowing down at around maybe 10-5mph i notice the sound a little bit. then when on the gas picking up speed its got little to no noise. i did go around a few corners hard and did hear it but then it stopped after the harsh cornering. yeaaa....

Re: I hear a noise...

check the pinion, mine started whining and the nut was backing off. you'd have to remove the driveshaft and check for play there.
