New problem - 700r4 won't go into overdrive now.
I was going to the gas station earlier and put my car in neutral as I went down a hill. As I pulled into the gas station to get to a pump I put it in D (with the circle around it, overdrive) and parked it. I got my gas and started the car and I went to put it back into OD and the shifter went straight through the Neutral (which works) into OD and it wouldn't go. It was just revving. Somehow the shifter won't click when you push down on the top plastic piece. It drove home in regular Drive. I parked it, took the top part of the cover off to see if a cable or something is loose but the space is so limited I can't take much off.
Reverse works, Neutral works, regular D works and I don't ever use 1 or 2. Overdrive will not work now. Please give me some helpful tips on this guys. I've maintained my transmission well, so I'm a little upset about this.

Do 1 and 2 work now? Even if you don't normally use them check them out. Try to shift through all the gears, make sure you feel an engagement in each before moving on. Might need to check the cable.

Apparently the sprag (clutch in the transmission) has gone bad for the Overdrive gear. It requires a rebuild. I've got 2 Neutral gears now. Ever since this happened last weekend I've just left it parked because I don't trust that something else in the transmission won't go bad. The regular Drive works, reverse & neutral work too. I've kept the fluids changed & haven't beaten up on it. But with it being 22+ years old & it having 142,xxx original miles on the 700r4 I sort of expected this to happen at some point.
