New clutch now what?

Hello all, I have a '92 5.0/5spd B4C and i've had the clutch replaced probably about 500 miles ago. There was a slight grinding noise while decelerating while in gear so I figured it was a bad throughout or pilot bearing. The noise was significantly reduced after the new kit was installed but now the clutch does not grab as good as the old one did. The old clutch was worn down almost to the rivots but the car still pulled good. The flywheel was resurfaced and the shop only had to take off about .005 inches. I got a new duralast clutch kit from autozone. Sometimes the clutch grabs like never before and sometimes it'll start to slip at 2000 rpm. I can go through all gear fine.

Do I need to adjust the pedal or bleed the hydraulic unit. I was planning on doing both after reading some youtube videos but after talking to a mechanic he says that there in no bleeding or adjusting necessary because it's hydraulic.

He says that maybe i'll need a shim on the flywheel but it should be good to go as is.

I'm confused now, does anyone have any ideas? I probably have less than 500 miles since the install, should I expect it to be slipping for a while?

Re: New clutch now what?

bleeding the hydraulics will not affect the trans slipping at all.

its a clutch from autozone, so thats the first problem, only thing i would buy from them are car cleaning products and anything else non-mechanical.

did you break the clutch in properly?

did you replace the pressure plate too?

was everything cleaned properly before assembly?

Re: New clutch now what?

I did not do the install myself and did not supervise it. It isa new clutch kit so all is new....clutch, pp, bearings. Whether or not is was clean or not I don't know. Break in properly...maybe. I've never done WOT, i've got on it a few times, sometimes out of frustration and others just for fun but nothing over 3500 or 4000 rpm.
The other thing i'm thinking if a bad input bearing will cause this. I still hear/feel a slight grinding while decelerating in gear and when I shift and engage from 1st to reverse repeatedly I get a thump.

There's also a jerking acceleration when I decelerate in 1st and try to slowly accelerate without disengaging the clutch...what's that about. I thought a new flywheel/clutch would reduce that.

thanks for the feedback

Re: New clutch now what?

the grinding may be syncros.

this thump sound, have you checked the trans mount? it may be broken.

break in is critical, your supposed to take it easy for 3-500 miles depending on the clutch, maybe even more or less. You can glaze the disc, then its shot.

reverse is not syncronized, so the reverse gears are still moving when you shift from 1st. Its best to put the shifter in 4th first quickly, don't have to engage the clutch, just put it in gear and the internals will stop moving and it will go into reverse without grinding or anything.

the jerking is the engine bogging a bit with the gearing, any car will do that. When decelerating, i dont normally ever put it back into 1st, stop at second.

Re: New clutch now what?

thanks 86TA, i'll take it easy as much as I can for a while. I guessed at the mileage, I only work 2 miles from home so 20 miles/week + misc trips is probably much less than 500. I'll check the mount but it has been changed by previous owner. I normally go to 5th gear before going into reverse and I don't usually compression brake, I feel the grinding on the shifter as well but the noise is not noticeable unless you're paying attention.
I was worried that i glazed the clutch but I have not been on it that much + tires are worn so they break traction fairly easily thus relieving pressure on the clutch, when I do get on it. I'll give it more time then if no improvement i'll swap for another if/when I have to drop tranny.

thanks

4th gear stops all the internals, the other gears dont, but if it works, stick with it
