My transmission nightmare
Hey guys, my car is giving me yet another problem..today when I was driving down the road, just after getting some gas in my car, I noticed that it felt as if it was running strange so I pulled into an apartment complex off the side of the road to change from drive to overdrive (I couldn't really stop in the street). Anyway, it still felt weird when I set it to overdrive but I said oh well and tried to exit out of the apartment parking lot by reversing but my car seemingly got stuck in drive..it wouldn't reverse.
I've never had this problem before and it took me almost 2 hours to finally get my car out of there (I had to get a cop to help me push the car up a hill from the corner I was stuck in so I could exit out)..it was an extremely embarrassing situation but at least I was able to drive it home after the incident..but now I'm too afraid to get back in my Camaro because it won't get out of drive (it won't even get into park, the shift **** will click when I shift into park but the car won't stop, it will just continue moving forward, so every time I need to park I have to pull the emergency brake).
I know I didn't give a really good description to my situation but I don't know how to simplify the wording. All I know is that my car won't shift out of drive and I'm not willing to drive my car until it's fixed. The cop said he thinks it could be a wiring issue but I honestly have no knowledge on transmissions or their wiring..I've been running into CONSTANT electrical issues lately and I don't know what to do.

Its the summer of faild 700R4s aroundhere and you just joined an expensive club
Though Id check the cable for a quick fix.
Dunno why you stopped, you can change for OD to D while moving all you like n it won't care.

Man some people just don't get it. In you other thread you were told more then a few times that since you don't have the computer hooked up anymore that you would need to do something about the TCC lockup before it damages the transmission.
You still think even after 4 pages of proving that everything the guy who sold you that thing was lying to you that it's still a 370HP motor? So he lied about everything but that? I'm not trying to be a ***** here just realistic, listen to the people you ask for help from. What you have there is a iron headed L98 crate motor taken out of a van that now has a burned up transmission behind it.
Before it's a complete write off check the fluid level in it. Maybe it's your lucky day and it has a leak somewhere.

Also OP sounds like maybe you broke your shifter cable or linkage broke. Get underneath the car and make sure the shifter on the transmission is moving when you change gears.

Re: My transmission nightmare
After re-reading your problem is does sound like you need to check the shifter linkage at the transmission. Hopefully it's just come unhooked.
For some reason when I read it the first time I thought it was stuck in D and not driving.
You still need to get the TCC sorted. There's a sticky thread on here with different options to convert it.
I would seriously consider picking up a haynes manual for your car too because this thing is a mess. They are only like 25$.

Re: My transmission nightmare
Had the exact same problem a few weeks ago.
Get under the car and manually move the shift lever to see if it clicks through the gears, if so then its most likely your shifter cable. Cost me $27.01 at a parts store and a little bit of my time to fix.
After manually placing the transmission in park with the lever, I could shift down into R-N-D, but going back towards park it would move freely and not engage.
Good luck hopefully its an easy fix.

Re: My transmission nightmare
it isnt hard to get up under to put it in reverse. but you might complain if getting dirty. ive gone thru 3 cables so far. going to get a gm one when i get up north.
its the cable i have my money on it. when they snap is hard to put from drive to park unless it just needs to be adjusted.

Re: My transmission nightmare
I had a similar problem when I rebuilt my motor a couple of years ago. The tranny sat for a few months and when we reinstalled it it did crazy things. And we didn't open it up. When we installed it, apparently my cables got damaged or something because I could get it into D/OD and reverse easily. Park was a different story. It wouldn't go into park. To do that, I would have to crawl under and push the linkage to the park position. It was as if my linkage wasn't long enough.
So we went and bought a new linkage and ended up having to make a plate to modify how it mounted to the bottom of the tranny. So now, OD/2/1 takes a bit of work to get to.
I went around the block to explain that, but when you're under the car as someone is moving it get them to call out what gear they moved it to and you should see each stage it goes through. If it doesn't move, replace that cable. I promise it's not all that hard.

I think that is your main problem, you don't know enough, not to be mean but any corn field grown bubba could crawl under a car n figure out where the cable is.

Re: My transmission nightmare
cable that is mounted to the side of the tranny is your shift cable. on the driver side of the car. two bolts mount the bracket that it sits in to the trans pan. really thou if you look you will see how simple it is.

Re: My transmission nightmare
Bump.
As everyone expected, it was the shifter cable that was messed up..I took it out today and I could pull the silver cable right out of the black rubber that coated it..the end of the cable must have worn out and snapped somehow. I'm able to change gears and put it in park when I move the linkage under the car, but I won't be driving this thing until I get a new cable..any recommendations on what brand to get? I found a Dorman model #04260:
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...ci_sku=3925781
I don't know this brand or how reliable their parts are, so any recommendations are welcomed
Edit: Apparently this product got some really bad reviews..I'll stray away from the Dorman. What do you guys think of these instead?

Re: My transmission nightmare
Stay away from the dorman if you can. It will work in a pinch to get you driving again, but it doesn't fit as well as the original and occasionally will get stuck between R and P and just hang in neutral. Sucks if you're tying to park and not roll into something. Try and find a GM replacement if possible.

I know Dorman is the actual manufacturer of this product but would it be better than the other model? I've only found 2 companies that produce the shifter cable that will fit my car.

Does anyone know anything about the ATP shifter cable?
http://carpartscloseouts.com/TRANSHI...B000C8RCCO.htm
I know there's not a picture available, I haven't been able to find one. I would just like to know if anyone has experience with one of these (the model is the ATP y240). There aren't any junkyards close by and I'd rather get a new cable anyway..any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Re: My transmission nightmare
Just go to the dealer and ask for the part. It may be discontinued though. If you really want quality, then get a B&M shifter for $200. It comes with a shifter cable.
