Shattered governor gear and no shifting.
Probably a stupid question, but if the governor gears were shot, would a 700r4 not shift out of first at all? I still have reverse, too.
Here's the story behind this: After I removed the tailshaft housing to put my old speedometer gears into my new transmission, I noticed the governor gear on my old one was completely mashed. I got it stuck in the snow (I'm a retard) last winter and shifted too quick from forward to reverse. I heard a grinding noise, and when I got it out it wouldn't leave first. I described what happened to a local transmission shop and he said I blew a sprag and would need to rebuild my trans. I don't want to just replace this gear and put it in to have it still not work because something else might have broke at the same time, so I just want to make sure that a crappy plastic governor gear breaking will disable a 700r4.

Yes, without the governor gear the trans will only have 1st and reverse. No upshifts will occur. Note that this is a common issue (worn out gear) on high mileage transmission. Usually they end up looking like an apple core.

Hmmm... if it looks like half an apple core bitten in half, does it count? Lol thanks for the info!! Now I just need a cheap car to crash into the transmission shop for tricking me.
