700R4 shifting out of first?
My newly rebuilt 700R4 will shift into second gear @ about 3-4000rpm, even when manually in first. Any thoughts or suggestions? A transmission guy I am not!

For a fix so that 1st can be held to any speed, the TransGo reprogramming kit will do it. I don't recall the exact name of the required kit, but it does work.

Re: 700R4 shifting out of first?
I guess I should of stated it is a non-lockup transmission. As for they all do that, I've never had this problem before out of 2- Z28s and four different trans ( 1- non lockup). I have heard this before though.

Re: 700R4 shifting out of first?
I dont beleive it would be the govenor weights. The govenor limits any gear to about 5,500, generally by releasing pressure on the clutch when in manual, unless its modified. Second gear is held off by the manual valve when in manual first. I think you either have a misadjusted manual valve or an issue in the valve body. Check linkage adjustment.
Fluid pressure is either bypassing the manual valve or there may be check ***** missing or misplaced. You just had the trans rebuilt? By whom? Shouldn't they fix it for you?

Re: 700R4 shifting out of first?
Doc, thanks for the input. The shifter linkage is good and cable adjusted properly. What you are saying makes alot of sense. I purchased the Tranny from an eastcoast co. I am waiting on a reply from them. I will keep you posted as to what they say and what I find. When you say linkage, you are talking about the shifter or something else??? I've never done any valvebody work, but I think I may be learning real soon????
Re: 700R4 shifting out of first?
All stock 700R4's will come out of 1st at some rpm if held 1st gear long enough. Some earlier than others. The TransGo 700-2-3 Performance Shift kit will hold 1st gear to any rpm. I carry the modified version of the TransGo Performance Shift kit. Make sure the TV cable is tight at WOT. This can effect the ability to hold off the 1-2 shift when in manual low.

Re: 700R4 shifting out of first?
Well the mfr. is sending me two governors w/ lighter weights. They said to try them and to also tighten the TV one click when I install the gov. If this doesn't work, I guess it's on to the valve body and a shift kit. I would like to thank everyone for their input. If you have any thoughts on this, please reply....thx JC

Hey J91, I was talking about the manual gear selector cable. The TV cable adjustment is also key to setting shift points.

Re: 700R4 shifting out of first?
Well Monster Trans, sent 2 Gov. While they work better, the premature shift problem in 1st is still there. After speaking w/ the mgr. they are sending me a beefed up valve body that he says will do the trick? I will have to pay shipping costs. Hopefully this solves the problem. They have been extremely cooperative and helpful throughout this process. I would like to thank everyone for their input so far....

Re: 700R4 shifting out of first?
Well i recieved a new valve body w/ a trans-go 2-3 shift kit in it, and a different 1-2 accumulator. The transmission is working perfectly. I wish i would not have had to of gone through the hassle, but it was worth it.
Hats off to Doc and the rest of the guys @ Monster transmissions, they were courteous, and helpful, through the entire process. Very good customer service. I would recomend these guys to anyone. Thanks for all of the help here. ASE Doc, and Probuilt you guys were right on. I've never done much tranny work internally, but things went well installing the new valvebody and accumulator...thx again JC

Yeah, pretty happy w/it. Good solid shifts @ 6500rpm. Acts normal as can be under normal driving conditions...
