couple questions about my rear end

alright i got this car as my first car and i wanted to do some work to it to make it faster. the previous owner did not do anything to the motor just interior stuff that i know of. but i wanted to put a power trax or a posi rear end in. so i was wondering how to tell what kind of rear end i have. whether its stock or changed. if its open or not. and if i was to get a power trax what kind should i get if the rear end is stock i know its a 28 spline because of it being newer than the 89 cause 90 was the start of the 28 splines and i was also wondering if the power trax would work with 2.73 gear ratio and then later on being able to be switched to a different gear ratio because i plan on getting 3.23 or 3.73 gear ratio. and the no slip does that mean if i was to burnout would both tires be spinning correct? ive been told i can get a posi rear end with 3.23 gears from certain years of the 4th gen camaro and all id have to do is modify the e brake cable and have at least 16 inch tires. imnot sure what would be better getting new gears and a power trax or switching out the rear end. all help is appreciated and i thank you for taking your time to read this

Re: couple questions about my rear end

The best way to find out what's inside is to take the cover off and look.

I would suggest that you dont't touch anything and just drive your car as is. Until you know the difference between Power Trax...Posi...Limited Slip just leave the car untouched.

Re: couple questions about my rear end

the difference is that a power trax no slip with slightest bit of torque both wheels are spinning acting like a spool while the posi limited slip can allow slip of the one wheel at times power trax the wheels are always in the same constant motion and i dont have that rpo code

Best answer and info for you is the above are all the same. Every manufacturer has there own name & design, but they are are all LIMITED SLIPS and operate the same way. And if you do not havre RPO G80 your rear is a open diff. Or to the uniformed a "one wheel peel:.....

Re: couple questions about my rear end

they say the power trax doesent slip at all thought because if it locking the wheels together and i know i have an open diff rear end and the one wheel peel is rather embarrssing which is why i am looking into either a new rear end or a power trax unit also for the power trax unit would i have to get any extra parts or replace any parts when putting in the power trax?

Re: couple questions about my rear end

Do you have the 10 bolt GM rear end or do you have the 9 bolt Borg Warner rear end?

RPO code G80 is the code that GM used in all of their cars and trucks for the limited slip or locking differentials that they offered. In the 3rd gen it could be a Auburn or a Governor Lock.

The Power Trax kit is the easiest to install and it can be used with any gear ratio. I like the Lock Right better than the No Slip. If you have been doing a lot of one wheel burnouts then you could have damaged the inside of the differential case to the point where the Power Trax will not work. One wheel burnouts are very hard on the differential and should be avoided.

If you want to install an Eaton Posi or a Duragrip then this is how it's done. http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19773 You will need to go ahead and swap the gears at this time because I don't think that these are available in a 2 series, which is what you need for the 2.73 gears.
