Re: spider gear swap

The spider gears (differential gears) have nothing to do with the gear ratio. The ring & pinion gears are where the gear ratio comes from. To change these you must know how to set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash. These are set with shims and must be within +/- .002 inch. You also must know how to read the contact pattern so that you will know what adjustments need to be made to the pinion depth and backlash. There are some special tools needed for the job.

Re: spider gear swap

It's usually better for the average person to have this done by someone who knows how to do it. There is a lot of learing involved with this process. I've been doing this for around 28 years and I have to assemble and disassemble everything at least 3 times to get it right, and sometimes 6 times or more. This is a trial and error job. You have to be patient and be willing to put it all together, check the contact pattern, take it all apart, change shims and put it all back together again several times to get it right.

Re: spider gear swap

No problem. If people hadn't been patient with me when I was getting started I would probably have given up and turned to something else. Keep learning.
