Hey friends... thanks in advance for your help...

I have a '91 RS 305 with a manual (T-5, one would guess). A few weeks ago, I noticed that I shifted into first one time and was able to (unintentionally) push the shifter over to the right while in first. This brought the shifter to about the fifth gear position, but I was still solidly in first. If I brought it back and pulled it down, I would be in neutral. All other shifting was normal. It's done this since. Again, as long as I brought it back to the normal first gear position, shifting was normal.

Well, today I did some work on the car (unrelated to that) and when I started to back up, I noticed that movement of the shifter was VERY sloppy in all directions. It was then that I noticed that I could only move the car forward.

I'm hoping this might be a shifter issue that is external to the transmission. Is it possible something inside the trans has broken?

pull the shifter out and look at it.

 

from what you describe it very well could be two things...both of which happened to me

1. the shiffter itself has broke...the welds on the plate can break and it will cause the shifter to hop out of the hole it rests in the trans.

2. the bushing in that hole has broke which can also cause it to slip out of the transmission

pull it out and inspect it
