T-56 Magnum + bbc

I just recently got rid of my tko 600 to prevent wasting $2200. I need a tranny the will handle more torque and shift slightly higher (7000).

They offer lots of different models, but which one would be best behind a 572 bbc with a hydraulic clutch? The one meant for LS engines? also who makes a scattershield for this application?

I know i really should just get a lenco or g-force, but i don't want to spend $6000+ on a tranny. This will be a street strip deal, but will be a small tire set-up (<10.5) this is the one i was thinking of.

any thoughts? has anyone used the t-56 magnum?

It's not a direct fit for LS1 cars, and with the BBC you'll be having even more problems. You'll need a quicktime conversion bellhousing to push it back over 2" and then the tail section is 2 or more inches offset.

What was wrong with the TKO?

A viper-spec LT1 T56 would be a better choice IMHO..

Re: T-56 Magnum + bbc

My motor will be making over 600 lb/ft probably 700 at least. 12.5:1, 280@.050 SR cam, 1150 dominator, 2-1/4 headers. Also, the tko won't shift above 6500, my motor is going to peak at about 6800-7000.

Isn't the case on the t-56 magnum stronger? more reinforced? I know it has wider gears as well. this is going into a third gen, not an ls car... sorry about the miss communication.

Re: T-56 Magnum + bbc

I figured it was going in a thirdgen, I was just commenting that it's a tough fit into a LS car, for which it was designed, other cars/engines will have more problems.

The T56 can be built to handle your power, you'll find lots of BBC T56 cars if you search. No problems shifting up to 7000+, I've done it and again lots of other folks have too.

The Magnum is not really a T56 in as much as it's a TR6060 with a different tailhousing. It has many upgrades over the T56, but the packaging of the Magnum leads alot to be desired. They were suppose to release a SBC/BBC/LT1 version, but the economy took a dump. The TR6060 has one major defect where it's small synchro teeth can strip off during a missed shift.

RPM transmissions will modify the Magnum to direct fit to LS cars, but it bumps the price up close to $5000. For SBC/BBC/LT1 motors, the regular LT1 T56 with 700lb-ft upgrades is the easiest swap. For 800lb-ft+ you can get a viper-shaft upgrade for it.

With that much power, you really don't want the wide ratio gears either.. The 2.66 1st gear of the LT1 T56 is the same as the viper and will handle more power and make for better track manners.
