Use RTV instead gasket
Use RTV instead gasket
Any advice using only RTV for sealing the trans pan ? , avoiding gasket , i have to get it runing this week and can't wait a week till the damn gasket arrives.
I've heard opinions being a bad practice for the trans.
Suggestions ? thx

i cannot comment on whether its good or bad for the trans, honestly i dont see why it would be a problem.
if you use the RTV, make the bead on the pan and install, but just snug the bolts about 1/2way. let dry 24 hours, then torque down to the proper spec.

Re: Use RTV instead gasket

i've read about a micro vent hole on the pan rail of the 700r4 used for 4th gear servo , if it's clogged or filled , i'll be f*cked up.
Any input ?

STEP 13
Clean all old gasket material from oil pan and the case. Wash pan in solvent and install with new pan gasket supplied. Do not use any gasket sealer. Make sure the servo exhaust hole is not plugged or stopped up (See Figure 10)

Funny , huh ?

Get the black material Delco gasket. Much better than cork. RTV is a pain when you go to service the fluid / filter.

Hehehhehe , auto parts ? , for sure in the US , but not where i live (they sell econobox parts).
Re: Use RTV instead gasket
If you only have access to the cork and rubber gaskets, then install them dry with no sealant of any kind, torque them "ONCE" to 65 inch pounds. DO NOT retorque them as this will destroy the gasket. This will do what you want here.

My grandparent's old mechanic used RTV on the Oldsmobile's oil pan, and it leaked everywhere and was a pain to get off.
You'd be better off with a gasket IMO

Re: Use RTV instead gasket
The rubber gaskets always gave me issues. I RTVed a Cork gasket a few months ago to my new tranny.... not a single drop since. I went very very light, single solid line. I put the gasket on the pan first with RTV... let it sit up for a min or so while I did a line on the tranny. I avoided the drain hold mentioned above and went extra light around it with the rtv.
It works...
Did a bit of research on the forums before I tried RTV, some guys swear by it and have nothing but good results. Don't go hog wild with the **** though.
