Doesnt wanna stay..

Hi, i have a 83 camaro berlinetta, 305, and im guessing 700r4 tranny. well, the prob is the shifter/cable. it goes from park to overdrive easily enough, but wont go any lower (drive, 2nd, 1st) and when i push it up too park from overdrive i almost have to use 2 hands to force it there, any reason why this is so tough and doesnt go easily into lower gears?

Re: Doesnt wanna stay..

Jack the car up and disconnect the cable from the trans. Now move the lever from one end to the other. See if it has a tight spot in it, or if it moves easily. If it moves easily, its probably the cable. If its hard to move, then its something in the trans. And even though I shouldnt have to say this, make sure the car is on jack stands while doing this. Dont want to have a jack fail or the car move when you take it out of park and crush you.
