Question about sub box volume

...so I'm trying to find a solution to my need for a sub. IF I decide to build a box, and lets just say it requires 1 cubic foot. (for the sake of argument). does it matter what shape it's in? I see a lot of prefab boxes are wide, but shallow. Probably for fitting behind a seat? For our storage area in our cars, deeper, but not as wide would be ideal. Does this matter? As long as the math equals the spec'd 1 cubic foot? ...maybe even a wedge shape?

For what it's worth, it's NOT gonna be big. Want it as small as possible (of course) BUT I still wanna be able to show of the craftsmanship of a nice clean install.

Re: Question about sub box volume

I asked this question to a friend who went to school for car audio and the answer I got was the shape doesn't matter.

Re: Question about sub box volume

That would seem to make sense, since (as far as I know) it's a pressure issue. Thanks.

Shape don't matter. More uglier it looks on the inside with shapes and curves the better it will sound. Less chance of standing waves so square boxes are not the best way to go. But if you do go square try to make atleast one side have an angle that will help break up some of the standing waves. As well as very rigid so it don't flex on any side, it will lose quality of sound and pressure.

Re: Question about sub box volume

I'm not 100% sure where it's going yet, but chances are it'll be the tried and true storage well box, firing up at the hatch. ..so it'd be a wedge shape! ...I don't need HUGE bass, but I want SOME...and it's not a daily driver anymore so I'd really like to show off of nice modest, but very clean, tastefully done installation. In the end I'm probably just trying to re-invent the wheel, but I still have to try!

Re: Question about sub box volume

It doesn't matter. Most of the prefabs are particle board truck boxes. The hardest part is calculating the airspace if it has alot of weird shapes. A wedge is no problem. I have a box in the side lock box but I may go back to the well box. My 10" sounded better there. Just hate to give up the trunk space.
