Setting up a Strange 3rd gen 12 bolt rear

Any advise on this is appreciated...

I bought a new Strange 12 bolt without any backing plates installed. From what I have read I know I am going to have to pull the axles to install the backing plates. As far as the parts I will use, I am starting from scratch. I found someone who is selling a 10 bolt 4th generation rear end with LS1 brakes on it (complete setup).

Would all of the brake parts swap over from the 4th gen rear with LS1 parts over to the Strange 12 bolt without having to machine anything, use spacers, etc? I'd like to use the backing plates, calipers, and rotors. If this would all swap over, would it all fit under the stock 16 inch aluminum rims that came on the 88 IROC? Would the E-Brake be able to be setup as well?

If you have any other advise on getting this setup, I am all ears!

Thanks in advance!

Do you have these parts?

They should have come with the rear.

Here is a thread that will help:

Thanks for the reply. I don't have those parts unassembled, but I think they are part or the currently assembled 12 bolt rear.

The thread you referred to seems focused on the e-brake cables. The main thing I am trying to figure out is if the 4th gen LS1 brake backing plates, calipers, etc will bolt onto the Strange 12 bolt and not cause other issues, like interference with the stock rims.

Anybody else?
Thanks

Re: Setting up a Strange 3rd gen 12 bolt rear

It depends on the bolt pattern of the housing ends. They're not all the same. If the 12 bolt has housing ends to accept the 4th gen backing plates then they'll bolt right up. If not then you'll have to do modifications.

Yea, it depepnds on what housing ends are on the housing. Does it have the ends for the Chevy brakes and c clip axles? If it does then you can make the brakes work. If not then you might be able to get them to work, but it will take much more work. Another thing, the axle flanges might need to be machined to fit inside the rotors.

Re: Setting up a Strange 3rd gen 12 bolt rear

I'm not sure if that makes sense. Let me clarify. I have the Strange "bolt-in" rear as described in Strange's ad here: http://www.strangeengineering.net/catalog/pdf/077.pdf

The catalog states that it "Accepts 93-97 or 98-02 disc or drum brakes". So if that's what the ad says I wouldn't think that the housing ends would vary from rear to rear (assuming this is the specific rear I am talking about). Does this clarify what I am asking about?

I am looking for a straight swap (if possible) of disk brakes from a 4th generation factory rear to this one that will fit under my stock 16 inch rims with no grinding, spacers, etc... Can I used all the parts (backing plates, rotors, calipers, etc) from a single donor car to make this work?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks All

Providing you supply the brake parts from the years acceptable for the diff then they'll be a direct bolt on as that's what the diff is designed to use. How well they fit behind your rims is another case but the majority of the factory brakes will fit in 16" rims.

Looks like you have all your ducks in a row....
With that rear mine was a direct swap, except for the e-brake cables, which was in that other link.
I used my 16" Trams Am wheels with no problems. perfect fit, no grinding or spacers.

When you say "With that rear mine was a direct swap", do you mean you have the same strange "bolt-in" 3rd gen rear? (I assume so) If that is the case, when you say "mine was a direct swap", what was the year of the donor car?

I am just looking to figure out if I can do a full and direct brake swap from a 4th generation rear. And if I can, what would be my best choice of year / brake setup from the donor car.

Thanks again

Yes, same rear from Strange, '98-'02 brakes. Everything bolts on direct.

You have to use the alum. rear cover as the housing has no fill plug.
