Transmission HELP! Dying @ low RPM and LOUD thumping! - '92 Firebird
My car is dying at low RPM. It is an automatic and it dies when I change from park to drive, park to reverse, drive to reverse...things like that. It doesn't happen every time, but it happens enough for me to notice. I will be going very slow when it dies...probably 0-5mph. And like I said it's only after I change gears. It is fine sitting in park or sitting in drive with the brake on. I can feel it coming on when it's about to die. It feels weak and kinda rumbles out...but the thing is if I gun it and give it some gas if I feel it about to die then it will like "recover" and be fine. I really need some help!!!
Someone suggested it was a vacuum leak, but one of my buddies tested that by spraying break cleaner somewhere and it didn't react so he said that wasn't it. I don't wanna take it to a mechanic and be charged a ton of money.
There is also a loud thump if I accelerate to quickly. It only happens if I'm at a complete stop and I give it too much gas, it makes this loud thump. I don't necessarily floor it either. And like I said it only happens at a complete stop.
I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP GUYS! THANKS!!!

a quick way to check for vacuum leaks is to put tape over the throttle body then pick a vacuum hose and blow cigarette smoke in it. If you cant blow in then everything is perfectly sealed but if you can blow in look for the smoke. It sounds like your timing is off and thats why when you nail it it hesitates and then takes off.

I had the exact same symptoms as o.p., but now my transmission acts like EVERY gear (including reverse) acts out of sync. I get no acceleration.. If I move through all the gears I can drive in 1st gear up to 5-10 mph before a huge grinding sound happens. I wouldn't ignore it, FooFighters. I have a '92 with a 3.1.

the loud thump is your transmission mount, it's ripped, replace it. i also agree with either a timing issue or a ICM issue causing the stalls
