Bad Shifter Lever Damper?

Does this plastic/nylon piece go bad? The one in the pic to follow appears to have a hole worn in the bottom. If the piece does wear, what are the symptoms (I have an occasional buzzing from the general area that I'd like to eliminate).

Also a bronze replacement is available:

Any comments about the above replacement piece?

Re: Bad Shifter Lever Damper?

The hole is supposed to be there. When I rebuilt my T5 2 winters ago I got a new one of those in the kit and it had the hole in the bottom. I really couldn't see any wear or differences between my old one with 103k miles on it and the new one that was in the kit.

I've heard the bronze one takes some slop out of the shifter movement, but haven't tried one myself.

If you shift with Hulk hands, theoretically the nylon bushing can crack, fall apart, etc. If it were me I'd replace it with a stock style nylon bushing. A metal replacement will probably wear faster, make more noise, etc and probably won't improve the feel that much.

I'm not rough on them so I wouldn't care about going bronze on my own trans. What is key to prevent them from breaking is having it glued in securely. There's a loc-tite and a scotch brand adhesive equivalent that will hold it like OEM. RTV tends to let go after a while.

"shifter bushing sleeve" will find you a new plastic one on eBay for < $5 shipped.

It used to be that a dealer could look them up for a third gen without problem. But if you tried to look one up for a 4th gen, they would sell you the whole offset shifter block. That may be the case still.

FYI, T45, T5 and T56 all use the same one.

Glued in? Mine wasn't glued in when I tore the trans down to rebuild it.

Re: Bad Shifter Lever Damper?

When I was researching, I found that glue is recommended for the T56. My 85 shop manual, however, makes no mention of it--and several years ago when I'd disassembled my T5, there was no evidence to adhesive/glue of any sort.

Re: Bad Shifter Lever Damper?

Just replaced mine. GM Part # 14105942. The cost was $8.94. I definitely noticed a difference in shifting. You could feel the grooves on the old sleeve when you moved it on the shifter ball. The new sleeve was very smooth on the shifter ball. No drag. There was no glue or grease on the old sleeve. It came right out. Attached are a couple pics of the old sleeve.
