B&M Shift Kit Question.

Hello, I was lookin on a site and noticed that B&M sells a $45 shift kit for 700r4's and i was wondering if anyone has this and could tell me how hard it is to put it in and how long it would take...or would it be a good idea?

Re: B&M Shift Kit Question.

B&M valve body kits for the 700R4 are not a good idea. Yes, there are exceptions, but the TransGo Shift kit is the way to go if you want to keep the transmission alive for awhile. The B&M makes the 1-2 part throttle shifts usually way to firm and the 2-3 shift way too soft. The TransGo when setup correctly, will give you smooth part throttle shifts, and quick WOT upshifts, and address other problems. I have seen way too many problems with the B&M valve body kits over the years.

Re: B&M Shift Kit Question.

I agree with Dana fully. I had a B&M kit in my stock 700-R4 it made 1 to 2 shifts way too firm. If it was wet at all out it would spin the tires even at part throttle. If the pavement was at all sticky it would bark the tires constantly at during the 1-2 shift at anything 1/2 throttle or more. While that may sound appealing it's not when there is a police officer around and you can't avoid it.

I now have a one from Dana with the Transgo shift kit works great. Nice firm shifts without neck breaking 1-2 shifts all the time.

Re: B&M Shift Kit Question.

I love the B&M kit. I've also tried the TCI kit. Once you have driven the car every day for a month, you'll know when to lift off the throttle to stop the tire-barking. And I did bark the tire in front of the police. I did get pulled over.
He was not happy. I started by saying "hello", nothing else. That alone helped. He told me "son, it's illegal to drive like that. "the tire chirp?" "that's exhibition of speed" "sir, I respectfully submit that I was under half throttle, under 2,000 RPM, and I just had my transmission rebuilt" " so you want me to believe it's just out of adjustment" "well sir, something like that. I don't know transmissions, but I kinda liked it until you got me" "suppose it did that in the rain, while turning?" "oh" "I'm gonna let you off with a warning, which is going into the computer, and if it happens again, I'll have to write what you call a fix-it-ticket" "yes sir"
It is a cop magnet, way more than loud exhausts. Look what Harleys get away with. But it's very fun.

Re: B&M Shift Kit Question.

I put a B&M kit in a 88 Monte Carlo 350 TBI with a 200r4 and I never had this part throttle hard shift you guys speak of. It worked perfect for me, I even drove the car through the winter, never had a problem. I thought the transmission was very smooth.

Re: B&M Shift Kit Question.

Did your 200r4 kit come with the solid spacer that replaced the OEM spring for the 1-2 accumulator piston?

I dont remember just what replaced what but, I replaced a couple springs, spacers, drilled a couple holes bigger and it worked great.

Re: B&M Shift Kit Question.

I believe the Transgo kits also address additional issues that the B&M kits don't, which is why the cost on those kits are higher. It's up to you.

Like I said the B&M Kit had a crazy 1-2 and 2-1 shifts. I enjoyed it for a few weeks but after driving in lots of stop and go traffic in rain and etc I didn't care for it.

I've shifted my TransGo equipped transmission at 6800 RPMs multiple times already at WOT without issues.
