looking for 9 bolt advice - considering used rear or repair

I have an 89 GTA with a 9 bolt rear and I have only 1 wheel spinning when I launch. I jacked up one wheel with the car in neutral and could spin it no problem with 35 ft-lbs so I assume this means the carrier is shot. Otherwise the rear seems to be in good shape

I can handle a total rear swap but I don't know where to start with a repair. (I read the threads but I need a primer on rears) I have a lead on a complete 89 9 bolt rear and I thought I could test the posi by doing the torque wrench test on it. Will that give me a good indication it's in good shape? Do you know where I could read up on how to fix the posi? (not afraid of learning) What do you think a shop would charge to fix it? My budget on the repair is under $1k.

thanks for any tips
By the way I have some mods and I have ran it at the track. Best I could do is an even 14 at about 100mph but with a gradual start off the line because of traction.

Your carrier isn't always shot, it might just need shims, also you can buy cones and parts at 9bolt.com. As far as checking a 9bolt that's not on the car, i would take the cover off and look in the little windows in the carrier and see if the cones are rubbing on the ends of the carrier.

You could probably do it yourself if you don't mind spending the time on it and would barely cost you anything as well. If you have a vice, grinder and some hand tools your good to go, then just need a cover seal, some oil and shims for the cones(use anything that works). I believe there was a artical on here that explained it but basically you grind off the front of the cones and shim up the back side of it. It's been years since I did this so you would need to do some of your own research but it's not to hard and might take you a few tries tell you get the right shim setting.

Well if you do decide to rebuild the old one, which i would just to have a spare, I just completely rebuilt a 9 bolt with 3.70 gears, anyway if you need advice or help let me know.
