Can't stand 2-3 shift flare

Starting from the top. YES, TV cable is setup correctly. I burnt 3-4 clutches up after ~50 miles after first rebuild. I've learned my lesson.

It's been probably 5 years since the rebuild. Mainly sitting due to engine build and tuning issues.

1988 700R4
Upgrades:
Beast Shell
10-vane pump upgrade
Corvette Servo
Pro-Built TransGo shift kit 700-2&3/700-Jr-B (Circled steps)
** I was a bit thrown that one kit came with 2 different instructions. Could my problem be that I did both?**

I'm going to admit that this was the first transmission I had ever done. While it wasn't hard, I have learned a lot since then.

1-2 gear throws me back in the seat... A+!! (overdrilled hole B for FIRMEST shift)

2-3 is pathetic sounds like it's slipping, and then finally engages. Clutch/Sprag diagrams show that when 2-3 occurs, the 3-4 clutch pack is the only thing to engage. Should this mean that fluid pressure is leaking or building to engage clutch pack?

I remember replacing clutch return springs, but am not sure which ones they were. Dana, could you jog my memory if they came in the shift-kit?

I'm tempted to drop transmission and double check all my work. Maybe something for the spring.

Any help would be great. I'm not opposed to replacing parts again. It's just that aside from not driving more than 1/2 throttle because of 2-3 shift,I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Re: Can't stand 2-3 shift flare

The springs came in the kit. There are 3 holes in the separator plate that need to blocked. The 2nd gear feed hole should never be larger than .093", and that is with a 10" or smaller torque converter. .082" with the stock diameter torque converter for the best shift feel. Third gear feed hole should be .155". What 3-4 clutch clearance do you have? And what type of clutches and how many in the 3-4 clutch pack?

I'm not 100% sure on the number I put down. I just remember drilling out a hole at one point and saying "Oh crap... I think I used the wrong bit".

As far as 3-4 clutch pack... the clutches were the run of the mill ones that come in a rebuild kit from the local parts store at the time. Since it's been so long I don't remember any numbers for clearance. For some reason I think there are only 8 clutches in the line-up. I remember 9 was going to be really tights and I couldn't get the snap ring in.

I'm really second guessing everything I did now and am tempted to pull it apart and change 3-4 clutch pack as well as double-check all the holes in the separator plate/valve body that I drilled.

Thank you for the information. I'll try to double check it.
Hopefully I can get to that this winter and have it up-and-running for the spring.
