Swapping a 4 speed auto(700-R4) for a newer 5/6 speed auto?

I got an '83 Camaro Berlinetta, and it currently has a 4 speed(700-R4) in it, with the 2.8L v6. My original intentions were to swap a manual tranny into it, but I don't wanna go that far yet without the experience of even swapping an auto for another auto... So I've decided I would like to swap in a newer and better transmission.

I would appreciate any pointers you have for this? If it's actually possible? Etc..

Re: Swapping a 3-speed auto for a newer 5/6-speed auto?

All of those newer transmissions are electronically controlled.

Bolting em in is the easy part. Then you gotta figure out how to tell em what gear to be in at any given moment. ALMOST ANYTHING is "possible", limited only by things like physical space and how much acetylene you have in your bottle. But "practical" is a WHOLE OTHER matter.

Since you don't seem to have any experience with this sort of thing yet, I'd suggest a somewhat more moderate swap; starting out in the shallow end, so to speak. Put in a KNOWN GOOD WORKING thirdgen 6-cyl 700-R4 (4-spd auto with hydraulic control) and see how that goes. Once you master the twists and turns that even a seemingly simple swap of that nature can take, you'll be better prepared for something a bit more involved.

My mistake on the 3-speed, it's the 4-speed. I assume the 700-R4 the same one your talking about... I understand completely what you mean about mastering the twists n' turns of doing that work though. Any other suggestions of a simple swap?
