What did i do wrong?

Hey so i changed my transmission fluid and filter in my 1991 Camaro RS, 3.1L V6 with the 700-R4 Transmission in my auto mechanics class at high school. I took the pan off to drain the fluid, took the old filter out took the old gasket off, put the new filter in with the gasket, tightened them up in a diagonal manner, and then put 4 quarts of Dextron in.

Now my car wont shift from 1st to second, and it went 10mph with 3500 rpm. So i added another quart, but it still is only staying in first gear. The added fluid helped a lot i just don't know what i did to the transmission? It was suggested by the autozone guy that maybe i unplugged the vacuum shifter assembly?

Re: What did i do wrong?

Either the old filter seal is still in the pump, or the filter isn't seated all of the way into the pump. It takes a bit of pressure to push the seal & filter into the pump. IIRC, it sort of snaps into place when seating it.

Note that the 700R4 doesn't have any vacuum connections.

Agree. The o ring is probably stuck in place and the old filter just came out.

Sounds like low line pressure. Your bands are going to slip pretty bad if they engage at all. Dont drive the car until you seat that filter.

I recall a filter change being 6 quarts. You might put your car on level ground, with a WARM trans, check the fluid level......and you probably know the car must be running when you check it.
