700r4 identification

Could use some help identifying this tranny i picked up, here's the #'s...

Stamp# (pass side boss): 5BWD160W (or 5RWD160W, its worn)....Yellow # on driver side also read "160W".

Barcode sticker shows "4BWD"

It has the rainbow line through the upper coolant line

"6" is cast on each side of tranny(driver/passenger)

Casting #(driver side) 8685061

Input Shaft Face has #8682132 and G-471

Also has 27 spline output shaft (or do i need input shaft splines to help identify, i'll have to get that # tomorrow).

I'm conflicted on how to interpret the numbers, the 5BWD160W should indicate a 1985 tranny but with three-letter digits "BWD" i've read indicates 1986 or newer tranny...http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/imag...TH700-R4_1.jpg. And what does the barcode sticker number "4BWD" indicate?

Thank you

Alan

Converter info just for fun:

Sticker #DGHF2420 and 0411, google search says 85 or newer 1400 stall speed converter.

Re: 700r4 identification

The large 6 stamped near the back part of the transmission indicates 1986.. that's all I know though

Re: 700r4 identification

If the 6 case stamp means 1986, then that lines up with the 3-letter code BWD (not sure what the letters stand for specifically) versus just having a 2 letter code, but doesn't line up with the first digit "5" of 5BWD160W. I'm going to go out and see if i can get an accurate count on the input shaft splines and see where that gets me.

Re: 700r4 identification

I see two sets of splines on the input shaft, I'm assuming the first smaller set is what people refer to. That one has 30 splines, and the larger set of splines further back in the bell housing counts out at 27. If one set didn't count out to 27 or 30 then i could be sure of which set of splines to go by lol
