Building a 700r4 for 450 rwhp, what parts should I use?
I'm rebuilding a 700r4 to go behind a HSR 383 that will be right at 400-415 rwhp before the 150 nitrous shot. I want this trans to hold this, not overheat, be ok in traffic etc. What's the best parts, why's, and mods to do to the trans?

I can say this much, my 350 puts out about 425hp and I had my 700r4 done by a local shop that has built race trans's for me in the past. With a huge cooler and medium stall, it lasted one year and I think 5 trips down the strip. Hope you have better luck than I did. It set me back $3000.

Pro-built!
This was my first time inside a 700R4 and it's already outlasted every 'professionally built' 700R4 I've had in the past. I've made about 35 passes between 4 dragstrip visits and driven on a couple of 200+ mile trips. I stay in the boost as often as possible when driving around town. These are the three things I did to ensure as much success as possible:
1> Listened to Dana's advice & instructions regarding replacing worn parts (especially the reverse input drum)
2> Bought a good ($700 Vigilante) billet torque converter per Dana's and other well informed transmission builders' advice for my crank torque being 600+ when my plans are done, 500 now (I believe going with a cheap torque converter has a lot to do with early failures on 700's)
3> I did a 50 mile break-in where I stayed out of boost initially and gradually worked up to full boost at the end of 50 miles.
I still need to put a cooler on it before summer gets back around. Love the way it shifts. Very pleased with it especially considering it was my first build.

Re: Building a 700r4 for 450 rwhp, what parts should I use?
I have a BowTie Over drive in my 69 Firebird. My 455 puts 358/370 at the wheels. I have been to the track and run hard on the street since 2003. It's probably got 80,000 miles on it now. It had a Great warranty and still works great. Keep it cool, (they cool a lot better with a lock up converter), keep the TV cable taught, change the fluid at least every year or so, if you decide to build, build an 87 - 91 get the super pump kit, the 5 wheel sprag, the good sungear, DO ALL THE LUBE UPDATES. Those can be found in TSB's. Lube failure is common in 700's, Use commercial grade clutches, put 9 clutches in your 3/4 pack. ANd make sure your core is as clean as you can get it! Lubguard is a decent additive, don't use anything else. It's the only one recomended by GM.
Good Luck!
