T5 surface fracture on reverse shaft mount

Hey guys,

I just noticed this hairline crack on my transmission. I'm in the process of rebuilding it. I realize this isn't a high stressed area, but I'm wondering what to do about it. I don't want to go through all the hassle of rebuilding the transmission, and then having that guide snap and lose my reverse gear.

I hope the picture shows clearly where its located (for any that have looked inside a T5).

I also hope this picture attachment works!

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: T5 surface fracture on reverse shaft mount

i'm by no means an expert , but i would be very afraid to use that case . it's my understanding that the center case is the weak point on our tranny's . i believe i saw a post a while back about an aftermarket center case that cures this problem . do a search . the T-5 is used in our cars , mustangs , and jeeps (maybe others) with no problems . they all have a different center case than ours . whatever you decide , good luck .

e-mail that pic to Bob Hanlon at hanlonmotorsports.com

He will be about the best judge of what you should do.

Re: T5 surface fracture on reverse shaft mount

I use to have a coworker who could TIG and that's what I would do then.
Now, I would look for a use a WC V6 T5 for the case and use that.

While you're in there, consider this: http://www.5speeds.com/t5.htm

Best I can see from that picture it is just casting flash and not a crack. I would finish the dissassembly clean it and look more closely. But I doubt it is a crack. New WC cases are very hard to find. We have some NWC cases (can't tell what you have from your pic) I also have G-force cases for GM T-5s on the shelf let me know if I can help you. Thanks Bob

I hope that is the case. I completely disassembled it and apparently never examined the case very well before I started throwing stuff back in. It is a WC tranny. I will be running this behind a mild 350 so any further guidance in what to do (maybe more pics will help), or how to determine if its a crack, would be great!

Re: T5 surface fracture on reverse shaft mount

Anyone with further insight? I'm unsure how to proceed, and this has already cost me more than expected.

Re: T5 surface fracture on reverse shaft mount

If it were me, I'd try to file away the flash, and see what happens. You'll have to flush the filings out of the case when you are done, though.
