Re: trans swap question
Tools, min 18" lift jack, 4 big jackstands. Line wrenches would make the trans lines easier, but not necessary. Lots of extensions are fun. box wrenches for the top two bolts.
If you don't have a jack with a trans plate adapter then a buddy would be super helpful.
Should be 4 10m bolts for the rear driveshaft u-joint. Remove, catch the fluid that will drain out of the tail shaft.
Remove the shifter cable
Remove the 3 bolts holding the torque converter to the flexplate, a prybar is useful to turn the flexplate.
Remove the trans lines.
Remove the lower 6 trans bellhousing bolts. 4 of them are accessible from the bottom of the car, 2 from the top if you reach behind the engine.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: trans swap question
Another transmission would help too. Maybe a new torque converter, if you want your new trans to last. Good time to put in a new trans mount while it's all apart anyway.

Re: trans swap question
In that case no special tools. But I'd pick up a trans filter. And trans line flush. It'll remove any old contaminants from the system. Either buy a new tq. Or use the one from the trans you buy. You never know what crap is inside a used tq.
